Tennessee Notary Requirements and Information
Tennessee Notary Commission Qualifications
Notary applicants must:
be at least 18 years old;
be a resident of the state of Tennessee or have regular employment within the state;
be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident;
not have had a notary commission revoked for official misconduct;
not have had a notary commission revoked or suspended in the state of Tennessee or any other state;
not have been found engaging in the unauthorized practice of law by a court in Tennessee or any other state.

Governor - appoints notaries.
Secretary of State - performs ministerial functions including issuing and maintaining notary records.
Term of Office
4 year term.
Notary Education and/or Exam Requirement
Not required.
Notary Bond Requirement
$10,000 Bond Required (4-year term)
Notary Recordbook (Journal) Requirement
Required, IF the Notary OR the Notarys employer charges a fee for notarial services. Electronic recordbook (journal) required, electronic notarial acts performed by an Online Notary.
Notary Seal Requirement
Ink stamp required. Any ink color other than black or yellow; color must appear as black when photocopied on a non-color copier. Seal impression must be photographically reproducible.
Authorized Duties
Take acknowledgments;
administer oaths and affirmations;
take affidavits;
take depositions;
solemnize marriages; and
note protests.
