Indiana Notary Requirements and Information
Indiana Notary Commission Qualifications
Notary applicants must:
be at least 18 years old;
be a resident of the state of Indiana or primarily employed in the state;
Not be disqualified to receive a commission under IC 33-4-13 and IC 5-8-3-1, IC 33-4-13: Have a conviction or civil ruling involving deceit, dishonesty or fraud, IC 5-8-3-1: Have a conviction where the sentence imposed exceeded six (6) months.

Notary Education and/or Exam Requirement
Education required, new and renewing Notaries. Continuing education required every two years of active commission. Exam required, new and renewing Notaries.
Notaries wishing to register to notarize remotely must comply with continuing education requirements and pass a remote notarial act exam.
Notary Bond Requirement
$25,000 Bond Required or a functional equivalent. (8-year term)
Notary Recordbook (Journal) Requirement
Electronic recordbook (journal) required for use by a Remote Online Notary Public. Remote Notary must record each remote notarial act in the electronic journal. Remote Notary may maintain more than one electronic journal at a time. Remote notarial acts performed using audiovisual communication technology must be captured by an audiovisual recording regardless whether the remote notarial act is completed; remote Notary must inform all participating parties of the recording requirement before performing the remote notarial act. Electronic journal requirements also applicable to Notaries voluntarily using an electronic journal.
Notary Seal Requirement
Ink stamp required, paper notarial acts. Must be photographically reproducible; black ink specified.
Authorized Duties
Acknowledgments and proofs;
oaths and affirmations;
verifications on oath or affirmation;
attesting to or witnessing signatures;
attesting to or certifying a copy (tangible and electronic records);
certifying that a tangible copy of an electronic record is an accurate copy;
noting a protest;
any other act authorized by common law or the custom or merchants.
An Indiana Remote Online Notary may notarize for a remotely located individual, using communication technology and subject to requirements and limitations in statutes and any administrative rules.
